Crossville

Melissa A. Fitzgerald, 72, of Crossville passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 28, 2025, at her residence in Crossville. Melissa was born on February 16, 1953, the daughter of Fred Grimwood and Ethel Maxine (Hanks) Grimwood. Melissa loved to read, watch classic movies, and learn about the Renaissance period. Though she preferred solitude and didn’t seek the spotlight, her quiet strength and steady presence were a source of comfort to those who knew her. She worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and later as a CNA at Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

Melissa is survived by her children, Shawn (Jennifer) Gidcumb of Grayville, Tara (Dakota Goodwin) Fitzgerald of Carmi, Aimee Lee Gidcumb of Mt. Carmel; eight grandchildren, Ahna Lee Goodwin, Matthew (Lacey) Smith-Gidcumb, Zachary Gidcumb, Gabriel Gidcumb, Nicholas Gidcumb, Abigail, Mary, and Jessika; seven great-grandchildren, Lyra Grimm, Eli Smith, Charley Mae Gidcumb, Willow Gidcumb, Sophia, Aaron, and Isabella. She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, David Grimwood and Joyce Ritchie.

In her later years, her constant and loyal companion was her beloved dog, Mia, who brought her endless comfort and companionship.

Though she lived quietly, the love she gave was lasting. She will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of her family.

A celebration of life service will be held on a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi at 609 W. Main Street, Carmi, IL 62821, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
