Larry D. “Hayrake” Gunter, 70, of Norris City passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL. Larry was born on November 15, 1954, in rural Franklin County, IL the son of Freeman and Violet (Gossett) Gunter. He married is High School sweetheart, Brenda J. Curtis on July 2, 1995. Larry was an Iron Worker with Ironworkers Local Union 103 in Evansville, IN. He was a member of the Carmi and Norris City Masonic Lodge, where he had served as Past Master (Norris City) and Treasurer (Carmi). He was faithful to his country and served 8 years with the Indiana National Guard. Larry loved to tinker with tractors, ride motorcycles, camping and spoiling his grandchildren. Larry enjoyed bailing hay, which is how he gained the nickname, “Hayrake”.
Larry is survived by his wife of 30 years, Brenda; children, Scotty (Allison) Gunter of Nicholasville, KY and Amanda Earl; a step-son, Shawn Allen Kueber of Carrier Mills, IL; a sister, Susan Stuart of Evansville, IN; five grandchildren, Jacob Gunter, Abigail Gunter, Michael Earl, Kalisha Earl and McKenzi Earl; two great-grandchildren, Haisleigh Earl and Lakeynn Earl; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended Curtis family.
A visitation will be held to Celebrate the life of Larry D. “Hayrake” Gunter, 70, of Norris City on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City. Masonic Rites will be held at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to Black Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, IN or to a favorite charity and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City or by mail to 609 W. Main Street, Carmi, IL 62821
