Garrett "Red" Gwaltney, 73, and Karen (Batty) Gwaltney, 70, both of Carmi, passed away at home, surrounded by their family on February 1, 2022. Red was born in Eldorado, Illinois, on April 27, 1948, the son of Charles Harrison and Ella Louise (Seagraves) Gwaltney. He married Karen Batty on July 3, 1967. He worked at B&W and then later worked at Pattiki Mine in Carmi, as a miner until retirement. He was great at welding and fabricating and could work on and fix anything,
Karen was born on July 12, 1951, in Carmi, the daughter of William Earl and Wilma Arlene (Harrolle) Batty. She was a devoted wife and mother. Red and Karen enjoyed motorcycle riding, being outdoors, camping, boating and fishing. However their greatest love was their family and spending time with their kids and grandkids.
Red and Karen are survived by their children, Angela (Jim) Davis of Crossville, IL, Bucky (Misty) Gwaltney of Carmi, IL, Tammy (Jeff) Kingery of New Harmony, IN, Gary (Preschas Mattingly) Gwaltney of Carmi, IL, Mindy (Curtis) Staton of Carmi, IL, Johnny (Adison) Gwaltney of Crossville, IL; Red's mother, Louise Gwaltney of Carmi, IL; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Emilee) Kingery, Justin (Danielle) Kingery, Jenna Kingery, Dylan Kuykendall, Olivia Gwaltney, Elizabeth Gwaltney, Haylie Fulkerson, Layne Gwaltney, Will Gwaltney, Elly Mattingly, Hadlee Gwaltney, Lilliana Gwaltney, Jaidyn Staton, Jaxon Staton, Ella Staton, Drake Staton, and Asher Staton; a great grandchild, Andi Kate Hortin; Red's siblings, James (Vicki) Gwaltney of Mt. Carmel, IL, David (Jessica) Gwaltney of McLeansboro, IL, and Glenda (Don) Prehn of Ridgway, IL; Karen's sister, Connie Burris of Carmi, IL, her sister-in-law Debbie Batty and her brother-in-law, Bill Brown; numerous nieces and nephews and two grand-dogs.
They are preceded in death by Red's father, Karen's parents; a grandchild, Kaitlyn Gwaltney; and Karen's siblings, Bill Batty Jr, David Lee Batty, and Sheryl Brown and her brother-in-law, Ricky Burris.
A private memorial service for Garrett "Red" and Karen Gwaltney, will be held at a later date. Contributions can be made in Red and Karen's memory to We Love White County, and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, who is in charge of arrangements.
