Betty Jean Cross, 75, of Carmi, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 15th, 2026, at Deaconess Illinois Medical Center in Marion, IL.She was born April 20th, 1951 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Emma Lee Cross Sconiers and James Smith. She was of the Christian faith.

Betty, affectionately known as “Bebop”, was a long-time participant in various programs through Coleman Tri-County Services. She was a resident of Turner Manor for many years, where she developed numerous long-lasting friendships.

In her later years, Betty chose to live a quiet, peaceful life, supported by staff in her CILA home where she was able to participate in activities of her choice. Betty delighted in listening to all types of music. She also enjoyed listening to others read books to her, sitting outside, and investigative crime shows such as Dateline, 20/20 and COPS. She could often be found in her home, watching one of her favorite shows or listening to music with her index finger pointed up into the air- which those close to her joked that she was “at the rodeo”. Although Betty enjoyed spending quiet time at home, she was always ready to take a trip to KFC for mashed potatoes and gravy.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents. Betty will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her cousin, Jeanette Burns; former house manger Jenny, as well as many friends at Coleman Tri-County Services, especially her Lis’ CILA staff (Kim, Michelle, Autumn, Stephanie, Alena, Lilly) and housemates (Coral, Jamie, Dalton).

A memorial service will be held.
